A new issue

First, I apologize for not posting for a while. Stella's breathing issues have been great - thanks to the constant lemon treatments clearing the phlegm out. We travel with lemon, keep lots in the house, we are never without them! However, Stella has developed a new issue, less serious but irritating to her and her parents. She is obsessed with her butt. She constantly tries to get you to scratch her, and when left to her own devices, she sits and spins on any carpet she can find! A trip to the vet found she did have one anal gland that needed to be cleared out (yuk), but that didn't seem to resolve things. We are now giving her a low dose steroid to see if that will help calm things down, I will post an update when we see how it all turns out. In the mean time, any other bulldog parents have similar issues? The vet has checked for anything serious and can't see any problems with her rear, so we are hoping she will forget about it soon, its becoming an obsession.

  1. Our little boy Jager does that as well. At first the vet couldn't see anything wrong with his rear. After about 3 or 4 months went by, he started getting these large bald spots everywhere from spinning on the carpet and rubbing his behind on EVERYTHING. We took him in again, and it now seems that he has a bacterial skin problem that he picks up from plants outside. Try asking your vet for 12 days worth of Nizoral. This helped Jager extremely, he doesn't sit on us anymore, and stopped spinning on the carpet. Jager also has the same breathing issue as Stella does, and as something added to lemon that we use is called Little noses children's nose drops. It can be found at any major grocery store, it comes in a littel box, and its for kids colds and stuffy noses. We just give him two or three drops in each nostril, and it works for hours. This has helped WONDERS as well as lemon. Maybe you could give it a try- it seems to help at night, when I can't constantly give him Lemon. He wakes up with less phglem and less morning cough. Hope all is going well, we love to read your blog!

  2. My dog has the same issue too. He's always trying to rub his butt on my chair when I'm doing homework.

  3. Stella is a DOlL! I have a 3 year old bullie too (with MANY health problems)... and for the first time he has started this crazy breathing thing. I was wondering what the lemon does exactly and if it's worth a shot. I've been up all night worried about my boy!

  4. My dog finally vomited the phlegm!! He's been sick lately, and he even had a seizure the other day because he couldn't breath due to the pneumonia, but now that he hacked up the phlegm I'm hopeful things will improve.

  6. Thalvor,

How many times a day do you do the lemon treatment with Stella? Do you do the lemon treatment each day?

    Thank you

  7. These days, probably every 3-4 days. Totally depends on how crazy or active she's been. If she's being an insane bulldog like she likes to do, then we get her to play with a lemon half so she gets her lemon juice. I dint think it can hurt her so we err on the side of more vs less.

  8. OMG, our Speckles does the spin on he carpet thing too, she's been to the vet, and we just have to wash her hiney regularly cause she can't reach to do it herself!!! I use baby wipes and it cuts down on the problem, she doesn't do it that often, but it's very obvious when she does, and she wants anyone to scratch it!!!!! Poor Stella, good luck!

  9. Rose (year and a half old) does the butt scootch too - we call it 'itchy-butt'! it gets swampy and damp around her tail area. we treat her with a combo of baby wipes and cortaid. Also - get an anti-fungal flush from the vet - we use T8Keto and it really helps cut down on the muckiness!

  10. Our Pebbles does the same thing and as a long-time bulldog owner, I suspected that it was because her tank like body will not allow her to clean herself. We use a wet washcloth or cottonelle wipes to clean her up. Afterwards she is a happy girl.
