Stella's Doing Great at 6!

Stella passed a milestone the other day - she turned six! We had vets tell us she'd never see this day - and we fully expect her to easily see another six if not more. She's doing great (knock on wood) and while we still have to deal with things like allergies (her feet swell pretty badly and we give her benadryl throughout the summer) and keeping her calm - it's nothing life threatening. She's spending the summer snoozing, going on short cool walks with the family, and just generally being a happy English Bulldog. I hope that all of you who've written in, posted, and shared your stories in the past are doing well and hoping the same for your four legged family members. If anyone has any updates, feel free to post them. And yes - Stella still gets regular lemon juice squirts and still produces big phlegm blobs that allow her to breathe easier and are hopefully preventing her from developing things like pneumonia, etc.

  1. So, I'm glad to see that everything appears to be working out well for Stella.

My english bulldog, Dexter, is almost 1 year – and we had our Emergency trip to the vet today. He woke up about 7+ times in the night with reverse sneezes and coughing and wasn't eating or drinking this morning. After he vomited and started shaking, we took him to the after-hours vet.

They ran his bloodwork and noticed that his white blood cell count indicated severe infection. They took an x-ray of his lungs, which showed the beginning of pneumonia. They are keeping him overnight, treating him with antibiotics and iv fluids.

The vet also recommended, long-term opening his left nostril (which doesn't open as much as his right), and possibly additional surgery. Do you have any recommendations pre-surgery?

    Thank you!

  2. Meghan I'd get your pup better first, than consider surgery. Make sure his surgery team is well versed in dealing with bulldogs and potentially small teachers that can swell up after surgery and breathing tubes. Stella had the nostrils enlarged and her airway cleared of extra fleshy spots, which seemed to help her overall health quite a bit. As always keep your bulky cool and calm, and don't let the phlegm build up whenever possible. Good luck!

  3. Hi! I have an English bulldog, Shelby, who is 7 months old. I've had her for about a month now. I love your blog and was wondering when you know to give the lemon squirts. What an interesting idea!
