An Update - May 2010

Happy to report that Stella is doing great! She gets her lemon treatments and lots of "time outs" and that seems to be keeping her healthy. Her favorite things are to play upside down attack and grab, and to go for car rides where she gets her face as close to the AC vent as possible and then snores up a storm. Hope all your doggies are doing well and bringing much joy to your lives! Any new visitors, look at the early posts for info on dealing with health issues, and good luck!

  3. We found that the cough syrup that we used for the kennel cough when increased to 3 times daily took the flem away and Isabella is feeling much better this week we try to cut it back to twice daily

  4. Hi Stella, I hope you start to feel better with the coughing. I'm very lucky that I don't have those problems yet. I'll tell my mom that lemons are helpful!

  5. Why do u give the lemon? my bulldog has pneumonia at this time ,she is on antibiotics and inhalations, would lemon be good for her too?

  6. Cheryl,
The lemon helps keep phlegm out of her airways, but I would let your doggie get better before trying the lemons. They are great at preventative maintenance, but when they are sick the meds and lots of rest are great too. Good luck!!!!

  7. just discovered your page, love it!
our english bulldog is 15 months and has had an airway surgery to remove inverted saccules and an enlarged soft palate. 4 months after the surgery she is having breathing issues again - just at rest she will be unable to inhale. its very noisy and scary and brings a tear to my eye even typing this. I cant find any useful info online, and the surgeon says shes done all she can. hoping you may know of someone else with this problem, or perhaps a knowledge base where I can find any help. thanks for your blog its great!

  8. My Diesel is about 14 months now and has always been a little plemmy (gurgly). He has had pneumonia several times and is on (5)different medications. His lungs have been clear (2) months now (so happy & keep my fingers crossed). the vet said we could start weening him off the Clavamox but it's been about (2) weeks now and the gurgling is coming back. I will speak with my vet today but it seems like he will be on meds for his whole life. It's tough and very expensive but hey I love him to death. Whatcha gonna do!

  10. I have been dog sitting my neighbor's bulldog for the summer and he is unavailable. Duke has become the love of our lives and I am hoping his current owner is going to let us give Duke a permanent home. I knew nothing of bulldogs until 3 months ago. I need help!! I am so out of my league, but I want to learn!! My email is sjeaster@cox.net if anyone out there is willing to work with me. Thanks.

  11. My bullie Elmo passed away on 8/13/10; he had all the breathing issues that everyone is writing about here including hypoplastic trachea. We came home after being gone for 4 hours to find him "sleeping", only to discover he had expired. Elmo had laryngeal saccular surgery in Nov. 2009, and he was taking bronchial medication; but his breathing was slowly getting worse and none of the vets could find any other problems. Thank you for posting this blog to educate and bring awareness to English bulldog owners regarding breathing problems in this breed. My breeder has agreed to replace my dog Elmo and I will continue to come back to your blog. Like your dog Stella; Elmo was the greatest bullie ever!

  12. To Elmo's parents, I am so sorry to hear the sad news about Elmo, but he clearly lived a life full of love before he had to move on. We can never truly guarantee our pets are healthy and here for a long time, just like we can't for the humans we love. It's about the quality of time more than the amount of time, and I am sure you will treasure the time you had with Elmo for the rest of your lives. Now its time to welcome a new soul into your family, and hopefully you will have a happy healthy doggie to look after in Elmo's memory.
